1. Everyone should know what they want to be or do by the time they are 16 . . . or 18 . . . or 21 . . . or 28 . . . or 38 . . . Not true. Few people have a strong idea of their preferred career from an early age, while others discover their 'ideal' or 'best-fit' career by a process of trial and error.
2. Having a degree makes it easier to choose a career . . . Not unless your degree is vocational (directly related to your chosen career) i.e. medicine, architecture etc. and you remain committed to that career area. There are hundreds of modern-day careers to choose from and many of them are open to graduates with any degree background.
3. If you choose the wrong career first time round, all is lost . . . Not at all. These days, many graduates will spend six months to several years 'trying out' several careers/job roles until they find a 'comfortable or fit' or something approaching their 'ideal' career. Remember - any job that you do will give you some valuable skills and experience, even though it may not seem like it at the time.
4. You have to choose a career related to your degree subject. Not true. Many graduate-entry vacancies are open to students from any subject discipline.
5. A Careers Advisor will tell you what to be or do . . . A Careers Adviser will certainly listen to you talk about your aspirations, worries and ideas, help you explore and understand both yourself and the opportunities available to you . . . but the final decision about career and job choice is always yours.
In other words there is no QUICK FIX to finding your ideal career!
